The Power of a Good Laugh

ree

When was the last time you had a great laugh? When was the last time you laughed so hard your stomach hurt? While we as Black men are often expected to be stoic, hard, challenging, and whatnot, laughing, giggling, and smiling can be powerful forms of resistance, healing, and self-love.

I will show you that laughter can foster healing and happiness in your life.

Growing up and attending public school as a child, a good joke was my vice; I would laugh so hard, until tears rolled down my face, until teachers noticed and disciplined me! My older

sister can always make a joke out of any situation - it is a great coping mechanism. My Grandfather, who lived very long (May he rest in peace), allowed his grandchildren to tickle him, which was profound given Nigerian cultural expectations around our elders, and he was always found laughing and giggling.

Here are some tips that can help you cultivate laughter in your life:

1) Watch standup comedy/various content creators: Think about comedians that speak to your lived experience and who combine humour and vulnerability; this can help grow past what you are dealing with

2) Try a new hobby: Lose control, access your vulnerability by doing a hobby you do not know how to do (i.e., standup comedy, pottery, painting)! We often face expectations to work twice as hard - this is your opportunity to let go of competition, stress and order and engage in something that allows you to let loose.

3) Go back to the past: Even remembering my Grandfather just now brings his old jokes up for me again! Try revisiting old photos, videos of you, friends and family and see the humour in past haircuts and styles, older fashion etc.

4) Do a daily joke: Engage with loved ones in telling jokes, maybe one person is responsible for the day, another one, another day, it can help when you laugh with others.
