Things I Had to Unlearn to Become a Healthier Christian

1. Feeling like I needed Christian influencers to strengthen my faith
I eventually felt the need to unfollow Christian influencers on social media. I am not saying everyone should do this, but it has been incredibly good for my mental and spiritual health.
I found that too many voices were telling me what God supposedly wanted, while sometimes seeming more invested in their own will, opinions and interpretations. That is human, but it was no longer beneficial to me.
Scripture reminds us to use discernment: “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:21
These days, I am much more intentional about whose voice I allow into my spiritual life. I focus on Jesus Christ, Scripture, and pastors within my own church community whom I know and trust.
2. Believing I had to strip away my identity to look “saved”
I had to unlearn the idea that becoming a Christian meant becoming a less recognizable version of myself.
People can become very invested in deciding what a “saved” person should look like, sound like, wear, enjoy or express. But I no longer believe that faith requires me to erase everything that makes me uniquely me.
I bring my personality, culture, creativity, experiences, and identity into my relationship with God.
“I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” - Psalm 139:14
